Reading:
In fourth grade we continue with the reading series Imagine It! Students will be guided through five units of stories that focus on different themes. There are five stories within each of the units. At the end of each story an assessment will be given to check for understanding.
The unit that we are studying this week is:
Risks and Consequences
The Big Idea for this unit is:
The story we are reading this week is:
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Important note from the teachers:
Having students read every night is very important, but even more important is that they are reading books that they enjoy and that are at their own reading level! Comprehension of stories will also improve when students read books at the appropriate level. One of the ways that we determine reading levels is through Lexiles, an online reading measurement system that matches a reader with appropriate books based on student interest and their current reading level. Click on the Lexile link below to find reading materials that are geared toward your child. If you need your child's current Lexile score, please do not hesitate to ask! :) - Happy Reading!

Spelling:
Most of the spelling lists coincide with the stories that the students are reading in the Imagine It! program. Students in fourth grade also have District Spelling words, which is a list of 100 important words for students to know. We have broken the district spelling words up into manageable chunks to ensure that students will be successful. Students will be given a pre-test of spelling words on Monday. If your child passes the pre-test with a score of 100% they will be exempt from the spelling test on Friday. If the spelling test is not passed on Monday students will re-take the test on Friday.
Please use the link below to access all of the spelling lists that will be completed this year. We use SpellingCity.com to manage all of our spelling lists. This site also offers games that allow children to practice their spelling words in a fun way. You also have the option to print the list if another copy is needed at home!
The current list that we are working on this week is: Island of the Blue Dolphins
